Kratom: Legal Status & Research

Kratom, also known as Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. The tree has a long history of use in traditional herbal remedy, particularly in Thailand and Malaysia. The leaves of the kratom tree contain compounds that can have both stimulating and sedative effects on the body.

In the early 21st century, kratom began to gain popularity as an herbal tea and alternative product in the Western world. It was marketed as a natural remedy for a variety of conditions, including pain, anxiety, and opioid addiction.

However, as kratom's popularity grew, so did concerns about its safety and potential for abuse. In 2016, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposed a ban on the sale and possession of kratom, citing concerns about its potential for abuse and overdose. The proposal was met with widespread opposition from kratom advocates, who argued that the ban would limit access to a useful and relatively safe alternative to opioid painkillers.

In the end, the DEA withdrew its proposal and kratom remains legal in most states of USA. Despite of this, it is not legal in some states, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the risks associated with kratom use.

However, the recent scientific research and studies have shown that kratom may have potential therapeutic benefits for certain ailments and struggles. Therefore, more research is needed to understand the full potential of the kratom plant, and how it can be used safely and effectively as a treatment.
